Revealing a Hidden Story about Godaddy’s Hosting

CLARIFICATION: According to Godaddy  Recently they have removed all the limitations that I’ve mentioned below.

GoDaddy never sells a true www hosting;

Any site owner has a very rightful perception about her/his website penetration through the World Wide Web, assuming the website has to be reachable across the whole World Wide Web.

ScreenShot Shows Godaddy’s Defination of Web Hosting

Which technically means when I buy a web hosting plan and I publish my website through the host with proper technical guidelines, My website must be viewable from any internet connection from any place in the world via a web-browser.

Though GoDaddy definition of Web Hosting is: “Web hosting is what makes your website viewable to people all over the world.” But none of GoDaddy’s web hosting packages are actually matching its definition of web hosting. GoDaddy’s hosted websites are not reachable through particular countries and Geo Locations because GoDaddy itself has restricted access to its servers for those particular countries.

GoDaddy has not published any notice reminding this fact to its customers when customers want to buy a hosting plan or in during of using the service.

GoDaddy keeps its customers in absolute blindness that their websites are not reachable for many internet users, for example by Iranian internet users who were about 9 million (source CIA factbook;2009), and by accelerating growth in number of users now with over 24 million internet users, 16 million Iranians estimated to be on Facebook, and Iran is generating about 2% of total internet traffic. I am not sure but I guess GoDaddy has restricted access to its servers for the users from few other countries, and the users have no voice to to announce their limited access.

I truly like Godaddy’s domain service, it’s reliable and secure, I also have been using GoDaddy hosting services and we received some objections from our visitors that the site is not reachable in Iran, The first guess was Iran’s filtering system which blocks many sites on the net and won’t allow users to access many websites due to the government’s harsh censorship policies, So as soon as I received the complains I assumed my websites, which are hosted on GoDaddy are victim of Iran’s filtering system but after researching the problem we came to know that the IP of our website is not reachable from Iran even with proxy tools, which Iranians widely use to bypass the government blockades. My websites hosted on GoDaddy could be reachable from Iran only if the users go through a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection with US or Europe IPs. This fact left us no doubt that our hosting service provider has restricted access to our websites from countries such as Iran.

I did call GoDaddy customer service and spent more than 50 minutes on the phone to reach to an authorized customer service supervisor who officially admitted GoDaddy’s intensive restrictions on particular geo locations.

This restriction is applied on all the hosting packages being sold by GoDaddy. GoDaddy’s excuse for such a restriction is to follow US government acts related to not dealing or providing service on targeted locations for under sanction countries. I realize there is no such a rule to justify what GoDaddy is doing.

Initially what GoDaddy is doing is against the fundamental concept of World Wide Web.

US government has always been encouraging free access to internet and free circulation of information specially for the Geo-Locations, which are under censorship such as Saudi Arabia, Dubai, China, North Korea and Iran.

Many websites, web services, social media tools are financed, created, governed and encouraged by US government to entertain and communicate with Iranians inside Iran, I shall name VOA Persian ( Voice of America Persian service) with daily live video and radio broadcasting through the web and satellites; targeting Iran.

Even US department of estate has launched a website as the virtual embassy of US in Iran. All the major sites like Google, Bing, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Yahoo, MSN and all the sites, which are hosted on all other hosting providers in US, are reachable in Iran while Iran’s government tries its best to block most of the sites because of Iran’s religious, ideological and political policies. Then how among all the hosting companies in US, GoDaddy has chosen to be even more radical than the US law makers or the Government? I do not buy what GoDaddy uses as excuse , really I can’t find any logical reason for what GoDaddy does, The reason might be saving some bandwidth as GoDaddy customers are kept unaware of the fact that their websites are not fully and properly reachable through the WWW.
